Module 1: Creating Student-Focused Sequences

How to meet your students at their ability and to create dynamic, accessible classes to meet their needs

Lesson 1: How to Create Dynamic & Accessible Yoga Sequences

All bodies—regardless of size, age or ability—have movement in them. And every body deserves to experience the joyful movement of yoga.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Vinyasa as a way to add movement to the body
  • How movement can soothe the body, especially when mobility might be limited
  • Vinyasa as a series of flowing postures or as dynamic movement within a pose
  • How to structure a class using a template to enhance the student experience
  • How the body is never the problem in a yoga pose

Lesson 2: Meeting Students Where They Are

Focus on what your students can do rather than what they can't do.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Working with bodies that are different than our own.
  • The power of language to foster connection and community.
  • Supporting students in the creation of their own narratives.
  • Creating a brave space for student exploration and growth.

Lesson 3: Sequencing a Class on the Floor

Remind your students that they are their own best yoga teachers.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Creating a 60-minute floor-based class.
  • How to break a class into segments to make planning easier.
  • Brainstorming poses and linking them together by shape or movement.

Lesson 4: Sequencing a Class on the Mat

Your sequencing can be different from traditional.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Creating a 60-minute themed class with intuitive transitions.
  • Brainstorming poses that support the class theme and work well together.
  • Working out a sequence on the mat to make sure it feels good in our bodies.

Lesson 5: Mat-Based Transitions

Be playful. Transitions add variety and texture to a class.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Moving from pose to pose in an intuitive and accessible way.
  • Cueing students to move from kneeling to standing
  • Going from Down Dog to Lunge (aka: the dreaded "step through").
  • How a simple flow can change based on how poses are strung together

Lesson 6: Hands-Free Vinyasa

People love the option of not putting weight in their hands.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Moving in an embodied way and adapting poses as a result.
  • How poses link together within planes of movement.
  • Creating a hands-free, accessible vinyasa sequence.

Lesson 7: Sequencing in a Chair For Low Mobility

A little bit of movement can have a lot of impact.

In this lesson, we will explore:

  • How a fully-seated yoga practice differs from other class types.
  • How yoga poses can be adapted for a seated practice.
  • Creating an intuitive and fun fully-seated yoga sequence.

Lesson 8: Sequencing in a Chair For More Mobility

Challenge your idea of chair yoga as passive. Chair yoga can be dynamic.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • Chair yoga as an active practice.
  • How a chair can be used as a prop as well as for a seat in chair yoga.
  • Exploring the possibilities of an active chair yoga practice.

Lesson 9: Accessible Sequencing at the Wall

Let your imagination go wild.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • How a wall can be used to support and anchor a practice.
  • Exploring the possibilities of doing yoga poses at the wall.
  • Teaching a vinyasa flow class at the wall.

Lesson 10: Advanced Sequencing at the Wall

Get ready to fly.

In this lesson, we will explore the idea of:

  • How a wall can be used to support advanced postures.
  • Building upper body strength to safely do arm balances.
  • Incorporating arm balances into a sequence in a safe way.
