Chair Yoga Doesn’t Have to Be Seated

Chair Yoga Doesn’t Have to Be Seated

March 9, 2021

Close your eyes and envision chair yoga.

What do you immediately think of when I say, “chair yoga”? If your mind brings up a picture of a yoga practice that’s done completely from a chair, you aren’t alone. You might also envision a practice that is slow, gentle, “easy” or that is for people of a specific age or ability. While all of those things can be true, they don’t have to be.

More than one way to do chair yoga

What if I told you that there’s more than one way to do chair yoga? It’s true, you can practice chair yoga completely seated. But what you might not know is that you can also mix standing poses with seated postures. Or do all seated poses and then use a chair for support during a standing balance pose like Tree Pose. You can even use a chair in a dynamic vinyasa flow that includes Down Dog, Upward Facing Dog, Warrior 1 & 2, Half Moon, Triangle and more.

Today I wanted to share this kind of practice: flowing, lots of standing poses, a chair for support. Get ready for a vinyasa flow practice where the chair stands in as a sturdy and versatile prop! Unroll your mat, find a sturdy chair and give it a try. You’ll discover that the humble chair is one of the most overlooked yoga props. You might even wonder how you practiced without a chair for so long!
