Why We Work on Balance in Yoga
Why We Work on Balance in Yoga
Life is about balance. Whether you’re a toddler learning to walk or a parent trying to manage the demands of family life and work, balance is key. Yoga gives us the opportunity to practice balance, on and off the mat.
A way to grow
Through the physical postures we build strength in our body. We get used to moving our centre of gravity through space. We challenge ourselves to try new things and keep growing. Our mat becomes a safe space to explore how our body moves and how it reacts to challenges. This helps us know who we are and feel confident moving through the world.
More than a physical practice
Yoga also asks us to find balance in other ways. Standing in Warrior 3 or Tree pose requires us to focus our mind and breath on the present moment. This creates an internal connection that modern living often lacks. Our yoga practice reminds us that life cannot be all work, all play, or all rest. A balance of all three is necessary for happiness and wellness. Yoga asks us to balance our emotions, noticing what we are feeling and how we present ourselves to the world. It asks us to listen, learn and take action, within ourselves and our world.
Grounded and authentic
Balance might seem like learning to stand on one leg at first. But a closer look reveals so much more. The skills we cultivate on the mat equip us to live our lives in a more grounded, connected and authentic way. This is why we work on balance in yoga.
I hope you enjoy today’s balance practice and notice how you feel grounded and strong afterward.
