Intentional Well-Being Podcast:
Why Representation Matters in
Fitness Spaces
Hello and welcome to this week’s episode of the Intentional Well-Being Podcast.
Today, I talk about why representation is important to our well-being as a collective. When you see an over representation of another culture and you don’t see yourself represented in a positive light, it can create self-hatred. When we see more people who look like us, doing things that inspire us, it makes us feel safe. This means the participant and the instructor.
This is apparent in the fitness space. It’s important to see cultural diversity. It is also important to see many body types and disabilities. Not just fit or plus size bodies. What about everyone in the between? What about those who can’t access certain advanced yoga poses or body gains?
It is clear that fitness companies are trying to show diversity, however much more can be done. As a result, everyone on a health journey will feel included. Everyone will feel their goals are accessible.
We want everyone feel like they are able. That everyone is represented. “Representation matters because we need a physical manifestation of what we want to do.” What we represent in the world and who we want to see in the studio should be the same right?
